Westlaw Research Trails are a fast and easy way to return to research you haven't completed and to document your research efforts. You can also use Research Trails to check the thoroughness of a new associate's work.
Research Trails are available to all Westlaw users. Simply click the Research Trail link at the top of any Westlaw screen.
Research Trails help you keep track of what you've done
Conduct routine searches
- Rename your trails for easier recall
- Add notes to your trail to indicate topics, clients, or other information
Share searches with others
- Email your trails to yourself or your colleagues
- Have your Research Trails sent automatically to a specified email address every time you sign off
Rerun searches from the past two weeks
- Research Trails are saved for 14 days
- Save individual trails longer by resetting expiration dates
Pay as you go
- Hourly Westlaw users are billed at your hourly rate
- Transactional pricing-plan users can return to any trail created on the same day at no charge until 2 a.m. local time the following morning; same-day (free) Research Trails are clearly marked with a black dot
