West km System Requirements

Following is an outline of the system requirements for West km version 4.x.
Note: All requirements are current as of the publication of this document. Please confirm the specific requirements with your West km technical consultant before software installation.

West km Server Configuration

The West km server(s) must be dedicated solely to West km resources and should not be shared with other applications or services.
Items are the client's responsibility to provide.
  • Hardware
    • Processor: Dual P4 2.0 GHz or higher
    • Memory: 4 GB or higher
    • Disk: Ultra2/Wide SCSI RAID (or more advanced technology) with the OS, SQL data, and indexed collection on separate RAID sets
    • Note: The above recommendation is dependent on the size of the document collection.
  • Operating System
    • Windows Server 2003 (32-bit) with the following components:
      • Internet Information Services (IIS)
        Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 SP1
  • Database Management
    • Microsoft SQL Server 2005 SP2 (32-bit or 64-bit*)
      • Code Page (1252 required)
        Sort Order ("Dictionary order, case-insensitive" required)
        AUTO_CREATE_STATISTICS set to ON (for West km databases)
      • Note: If a 64-bit server is used, it must be a standalone database server in the West km configuration.
  • Browser with Internet Access
    • Internet Explorer 5.5, 6.0, or 7.0
  • Word Processor
    • Microsoft Word 2000, 2002, or 2003 (required for West km document analysis)
  • Client for Document Management System
    • If documents are housed in Interwoven, Hummingbird DM, or WORLDOX, the DMS client installed with a user account that has access to the documents to be indexed in West km.
  • Firewall Exceptions
    • All your West km servers must allow HTTP and port 80 access for outbound TCP communications through your firewall.
  • Remote Access
    • Provide Thomson West with VPN-based remote access to the West km server for installation and on-going support. Examples of VPN-based methods include the following:
      • pcAnywhere
        Terminal Services
        Cisco VPN
        Citrix
        Direct Windows Remote Desktop
      • Note: Dial-up, GoToMyPC, and WebEx (or WebEx-style) access methods are not supported.
  • Statement of Compatibility for VMware Virtual Environments
    • Support is provided for West km running on a VMware virtual environment without initially requiring reproduction of West km issues on native hardware. The virtual machines must meet minimum requirements.
    • If your West km technical consultant suspects that the virtualization layer is the root cause of an issue, you may be required to contact the appropriate VMware support provider to resolve the VMware issue.
    • West km functional issues are rare under VMware, but performance and capacity issues are more common. Performance issues that deviate from internal benchmarks will require you to disable other systems that are competing for physical system resources and may possibly require you to remove West km from the virtual environment altogether.

Capacity Planning

A one-server configuration can usually be used for an environment running the following:
  • West km for Litigation for one site
    25 or fewer users
    less than 50,000 indexed documents
A multi-server configuration is needed for a larger West km for Litigation environment or for a West km for Transactions environment.
Upon request, Thomson West will work with you to appropriately size and configure servers and to provide scaling recommendations for environments with more than 750 users or more than 750,000 indexed documents.
Note: The server recommendations assume that indexing will be scheduled based upon West km recommendations, which result in server resources being available for content delivery.

* If you are indexing fewer than 50,000 documents in West km, it is possible that two servers may be required only for the initial indexing of documents and that a single-server environment can be used after the initial processing. The permanent server is used for delivery, database, primary indexing, and HTML repository/search. The temporary server is used as a secondary indexer for document analysis and requires a single P4 processor with 2 GHz or higher and with 1 GB RAM.
Configuration of Required Software for Multi-Server Environments
If you are distributing the West km server components among several machines, the following software is required on each server component prior to West km software installation.

Disk Space Calculations

  • Documents in West km for Litigation
    • Number of work product documents (in native format) to be indexed = D
    • Average size of document = S
    • Total size of documents to be indexed = T = D * S
    • Approximate disk space required on the West km server = T * 2.5
      • Example:
        Your organization has 100,000 work product documents, averaging 60 KB per document.
           D = 100,000
           S = 60 KB
           T = 100,000 * 60 KB = 6 GB
        Disk space required on the West km server = 6 GB * 2.5 = 15 GB
    • Calculations should also take into account these considerations:
      • Growth: the number of years in the server cycle and the approximate number of new documents being added to West km per year.
      • Backup/recovery: the ability to perform backup and recover procedures on a server within a specified period of time.
  • Documents in West km for Transactions
    • Number of work product documents (in native format) to be indexed = D
    • Average size of document = S
    • Total size of documents to be indexed = T = D * S
    • Approximate disk space required on the West km server = T * 8
      • Example:
        Your organization has 100,000 work product documents, averaging 60 KB per document.
           D = 100,000
           S = 60 KB
           T = 100,000 * 60 KB = 6 GB
        Disk space required on the West km server = 6 GB * 8 = 48 GB
    • Calculations should also take into account these considerations:
      • Growth: the number of years in the server cycle and the approximate number of new documents being added to West km per year.
      • Backup/recovery: the ability to perform backup and recover procedures on a server within a specified period of time.
