Honorable William L. Norton Jr.

This December we recognize the contributions of a pioneer in the field of bankruptcy, Judge William L. Norton Jr. Thomson West and the American Bankruptcy Institute (ABI) have joined together to establish the Judge William L. Norton Jr. Judicial Excellence Award - the "Norton Award." The award will be given annually to a bankruptcy judge, based upon a career of lifetime achievement, who has distinguished himself or herself as an educator, writer, or scholar.
It is appropriate that this award be named for Judge William L. Norton Jr., who, throughout his career, has demonstrated his commitment to educational writing and programs. He is the author and editor in chief of Norton Bankruptcy Law and Practice 2d, a leading bankruptcy law and procedures treatise, and has also authored or edited many other bankruptcy publications, including the Norton Bankruptcy Law Adviser and the Norton Annual Survey of Bankruptcy Law. He is one of the originators and founders of the ABI and the American College of Bankruptcy. Finally, Judge Norton is a respected teacher and, in that role, has developed the Norton Institutes on Bankruptcy Law, served as an Adjunct Professor at the Emory University Law School, participated as a faculty member for the Federal Judicial Center, and spoken at hundreds of bankruptcy education programs throughout the United States.
Judge Norton is a graduate of Oxford College and earned his law degree at Emory University Law School in 1950. Between obtaining his undergraduate and law degrees, he served in the United States Army from 1942 to 1946.
The Norton Award continues the long tradition of cooperation between Thomson West and the ABI, and is an honor fitting for an author that has made unparalleled contributions to the practice of bankruptcy law.
